The fastest custom ROM for Motorola Defy Plus (MB526)

Some screenshots (yeah, you can take screenshots on Android 2.3.7.) to wet your appetite: O.O

This guide will show you my way to root and install WIUI 3.1.27 (Gingerbread) on a Motorola Defy Plus (MB526) with Bootloader 7 (version 9.1). The guide has 3 parts, determining what ROM you already have on your device, rooting the device and installing the custom ROM.

DISCLAIMER: I and all developers of those tools will not be held responsible for any damage you will do to your device and i strongly advise you to read all the internet regarding this, and decide if you will go or not this way. Rooting WILL VOID THE WARRANTY of your device. So DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!!!

~~~ The device (Motorola Defy+ MB526) stock stats: System version: 45.0.2310.MB526.AsiaRetail.en.03 Android version: 2.3.6 Kernel version: 2.3.32.9-ge281b6e hudsoncm@il93lnxdroid54#1 Build number: 4.5.1.134_DFP-231
Since i have bought my Motorola Defy Plus (MB526) device i’ve been testing many custom ROMs and also made some tutorials on rooting and installing new ones.
The thing that make us click (and the technology manufacturers exploit) is that we will never be satisfied with what we have, it’s human nature, we want the newest, fastest and the most feature rich devices (without buying new ones 🙂 ).
So we have a low specs, old device that the manufacturer stop updating the original OS since the conception, the case here the Motorola Defy Plus coming with Android 2.3.7 with no official system updates.
But we want Android 4, 4.1, 4.4 and even 5 on our little matchbox but we can’t do nothing about it. This was true until really great guys made Cyanogenmod (CM) which is a custom Android that can run on old or new devices.
I have used CM 10, CM 10.2 and CM 11 (KitKat), yes, KitKat on the Defy Plus and Quarx is working on Android 5 Lolipop for the Defy Plus. O.o
Everything was fine but let’s be honest, you can’t put a Lamborghini engine on a Fiat Panda. That’s the case with newer Android on old devices, everything started to work slow…very slow.
So when you saw people around you just tapping and tapping and i had to wait a few seconds till an app fired up, i started Googling for the lightest and fastest ROM for Motorola Defy Plus. There were several ROMs people recommended but i first tried WIUI, a custom version of MIUI + Cyanogenmod. MIUI is a custom chinese version of Android/Cyanogenmod, used on XIAOMI phones etc. Yeah, you got that right, Android -> Cyanogenmod -> MIUI -> WIUI. Round and round we go. 🙂
Please don’t get me wrong, all Cyanogenmod versions are amazing and you should try them. I used the versions above for very long time but i just needed more speed and different looks.
Ok, i got you dizzy already, let’s get our hands dirty.
PROLOGUE:
You can be in one of two situations:
  1. If you are on a custom ROM, probably Cyanogenmod. In this case you should download this stock ROM and flash it with RSD Lite. NOTE: This guide is based on a device with the specs at the beginning of this tutorial and the links are for software that worked for me. If you know other stock ROMs work for your device, please use them. The guide here, the XDA thread for WIUI said to flash CEE or Nordic stock ROMs, so you can try those instead of the link i gave you for the stock ROM. I will not go into details of how to flash a stock ROM, there are tones of tutorials online. After flashing the stock ROM, continue with PART 1 below.
  2. You are on stock ROM. In this case continue with PART 1 below.
PART 1 – ROOTING:
  1. On your brand new flashed stock ROM go to Settings>Applications>Development>Enable USB Debugging;
  2. On your device go to Settings>Applications> Enable Unknown sources;
  3. Download FRAMAROOT to your phone directly and install the apk;
  4. Open FRAMAROOT and just tap Ghimli;
  5. Your Defy+ is rooted!
~~~

PART 2 – Flashing WIUI 3.1.27.:

  1. Download and install on your phone 2nd init – ver.2.3; This version has the Clockworkmod 5.x version (now you understand the NOTE 1 at the beginning of the post);
  2. Open 2ndinit and press Install bootmenu – the red text will become green after successful install;
  3. Go here and read the thread. I downloaded and put on the root of the SD card the Stable GB+ 3.1.27. version. The installation guide say that the developer started with flashing the CEE or Nordic original Defy Plus ROM but it’s not the case. We have already covered steps -1 and 0 with the PROLOGUE and PART 1 of this tutorial. The following steps are from point 3. of the XDA guide. Also there is no need to download and install Google Apps, they are embedded in the WIUI ROM.
  4. Follow the guide on XDA forums starting from point 3.;
  5. Enjoy a fresh look for your Defy Plus with lighting speed. ^-^

New device stats: Android version: 2.3.7. Yes, it’s the same Android version as the original Defy Plus but it looks awesome and it works lighting fast. ^-^

How to install Android Kitkat 4.4.4. via Cyanogenmod 11 on Motorola Defy+

Hello guys and welcome to a new tutorial on the most famous (nooooot ^-^) Kaigara Online website.

After completing this tutorial, you will have a rooted Motorola Defy Plus device with the latest Android Kitkat version via Cyanogenmod 11 (CM11).

I have a Motorola Defy Plus device and if yours is Motorola Defy, please read all the links carefully before doing any operation.

The tutorial will go to all steps from stock ROM, to rooting, to installing Custom Recovery, to flashing Cyanogenmod. If you find yourself in an intermediate state, please follow the tutorial from that point forward.

Here is what i did:

  1. Follow PART 1 of this guide. (Now you have a rooted Motorola Defy Plus)
  2. Follow PART 2 of the same guide, BUT, on step 3 use the latest ROM from here and corresponding Gapps. (Now you have Custom Recovery installed and Android JellyBean 4.3 via CM10.2)
  3. Download and put this file on the root of the sdcard. This will update the Recovery with TWRP recovery, a touch friendly recovery or a CWM recovery on steroids.
  4. Read the official thread on xda by the great Quarx and read about eventual problems related to Kitkat on Defy. (If you succesfuly install CM10.2 on your device, you will not have any problems…i didn’t. ^-^).
  5. Download the CM11 Kitkat ROM from here and put the zip on the root of the sdcard. (I used the latest one cm-11-20141017-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip).
  6. Download the GAPPS from here and put the zip on the root of the sdcard.
  7. For CM after 01 october 2014 you will need sdcard and ~30mb free space. Quarx explained that in the Kitkat thread on point 4 but i will go in a little more detail.
  8. Download defy.zip or bravo.zip (depend on your phone) from http://quarx2k.ru/index2.php?dir=oth…map3_bootstrap (NOTE: unzip defy.7z and put the new_bootstrap.zip and resize.zip on the root of the sdcard).
  9. Now you should have on the root of the sdcard the following files:  cm-11-20141017-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip, gapps (whatever you downloaded), new_bootstrap.zip, resize.zip.
  10. Boot into TWRP (at boot, when the led turns blue, press the volume down button > press Recovery > TWRP).
  11. Install new_bootstrap.zip. (DON”T do any wipe till i say so!!!)
  12. Reboot
  13. Boot again into TWRP and install resize.zip.
  14. Reboot
  15. Install cm-11-20141017-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip
  16. Install gapps
  17. Now is the first time you should Wipe cache/dalvik
  18. Reboot into oblivion Mmuuuwwaaaahhaaaaaaaa!!!

Tested stable custom ROMS

Motorola Defy+:

WIUI: fast and elegant.

CM11

CM10

– CM10.2 (follow this guide but with the latest ROM from here and corresponding Gapps)

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S:

Cyanfox: excellent RAM management.

UltraKat

HTC Sensation:

None. 🙂 Rooted stock rom with bloatware and unsupported apps removed works great.

Install Awesome BEATS on HTC Sensation (or any other Android phone)

Follow this tutorial and feel free to donate to the developer:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728391

 At one point in the instructions your have to type as root:

awesome

and you might encounter an error like the File system is read-only.

If this is the case, do this in a Terminal emulator:

$ su

# mount -o rw,remount /system

# awesome

# reboot

# mount -o ro,remount /system

Basically you will mount your system as writable for awesome command to work, then reboot (if the command reboot doesn’t work, reboot manually) and then remount the system as read-only.

And one last minor thing…on my HTC Sensation, i don’t see any difference in the quality of sound. o.O

Hope it will work on your device.

How to root and install Cyanogenmod 10 (Jelly Bean) – Motorola Defy Plus (MB526) with bootloader7 (ver.9.1)

This guide will show you my way to root and install Cyanogenmod 10 (Jelly Bean) on a Motorola Defy Plus (MB526) with Bootloader 7 (version 9.1). The guide has 2 parts, rooting the device and installing the custom ROM.

NOTE 1: ROMs newer than CM10 will not work unless you have Clockworkmod 6 and up and this guide is not for that!!! No need for details so trust me on that one! ^-^

~~~
The device (Motorola Defy+ MB526) stock stats:
System version: 45.0.2310.MB526.AsiaRetail.en.03
Android version: 2.3.6
Kernel version: 2.3.32.9-ge281b6e hudsoncm@il93lnxdroid54#1
Build number: 4.5.1.134_DFP-231
~~~

PART 1 – ROOTING:

  1. On your device go to Settings>Applications>Development>Enable USB Debugging;
  2. On your device go to Settings>Applications> Enable Unknown sources;
  3. Download FRAMAROOT to your phone directly and install the apk;
  4. Open FRAMAROOT and just tap Ghimli;
  5. Your Defy+ is rooted!

~~~
Now you can install Hiuninstaller and uninstall the system apps (bloatware) you don’t want.
At this point, you can stay pretty happy with the cleaned stock ROM and stop here, but hey, we don’t want that don’t we, we’re hacking and here we go to part 2.
~~~

PART 2 – Flashing Cyanogenmod 10:

  1. Download and install on your phone 2nd init – ver.2.3; This version has the Clockworkmod 5.x version (now you understand the NOTE 1 at the beginning of the post);
  2. Open 2ndinit and press Install bootmenu – the red text will become green after successful install;
  3. Download and put on the root of you SD card Quarx CM10 mod and GoogleApps ; NOTE 2: Here i made some mistakes and downloaded the latest CM10 mod (around july-sep 2012) and the GoogleApps (august 2013) and things went pretty bad: nu keyboard, no network, nu USB recognition. What i did was to flash a prior CM10 version and Google Apps around the date of the CM10 ROM. The links on step 3 are the ones that are as much as posibble new and are working together!
  4. Power Off your phone (when you Power On, be prepared when the phone LED turns Blue);
  5. Power On the device and the LED turns Blue, press the Volume Down button;
  6. Navigate through the menu with the Volume buttons and accept with the Power button and use the Back or Go Back links to go back up one level of the menu;
  7. Go to Recovery, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, if things will go bad you will restore your old ROM. So go to “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again, backup all;
  8. Select the wipe data/factory reset;
  9. Select wipe cache;
  10. From the main menu, select Advance and wipe Delvik cache;
  11. Select “Install Zip from SD Card” > “Choose Zip from SD Card” and select the ROM zip file you put on the root of your SD card;
  12. Wait! ^-^
  13. Repeat step 11 to install the Google Apps package also on the root of your SD card;
  14. Go Back and select “Reboot System Now.”
  15. Waaaaaaaaiiit!!! The first boot will take tones of time to load so be patient O.o; If you think you are waiting way to long: take off the battery, put it back, go in Recovery (when the LED goes Blue, press the Down Volume button) and do steps 8, 9, 10, after that Reboot.

New device stats:

Android version: 4.1.1

Enjoy JellyBean! ^-^
