How to root and install Cyanogenmod 10 (Jelly Bean) – Motorola Defy Plus (MB526) with bootloader7 (ver.9.1)

This guide will show you my way to root and install Cyanogenmod 10 (Jelly Bean) on a Motorola Defy Plus (MB526) with Bootloader 7 (version 9.1). The guide has 2 parts, rooting the device and installing the custom ROM.

DISCLAIMER: I and all developers of those tools will not be held responsible for any damage you will do to your device and i strongly advise you to read all the internet regarding this, and decide if you will go or not this way. Rooting WILL VOID THE WARRANTY of your device. So DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!!!

NOTE 1: ROMs newer than CM10 will not work unless you have Clockworkmod 6 and up and this guide is not for that!!! No need for details so trust me on that one! ^-^

~~~
The device (Motorola Defy+ MB526) stock stats:
System version: 45.0.2310.MB526.AsiaRetail.en.03
Android version: 2.3.6
Kernel version: 2.3.32.9-ge281b6e hudsoncm@il93lnxdroid54#1
Build number: 4.5.1.134_DFP-231
~~~

PART 1 – ROOTING:

  1. On your device go to Settings>Applications>Development>Enable USB Debugging;
  2. On your device go to Settings>Applications> Enable Unknown sources;
  3. Download FRAMAROOT to your phone directly and install the apk;
  4. Open FRAMAROOT and just tap Ghimli;
  5. Your Defy+ is rooted!

~~~
Now you can install Hiuninstaller and uninstall the system apps (bloatware) you don’t want.
At this point, you can stay pretty happy with the cleaned stock ROM and stop here, but hey, we don’t want that don’t we, we’re hacking and here we go to part 2.
~~~

PART 2 – Flashing Cyanogenmod 10:

  1. Download and install on your phone 2nd init – ver.2.3; This version has the Clockworkmod 5.x version (now you understand the NOTE 1 at the beginning of the post);
  2. Open 2ndinit and press Install bootmenu – the red text will become green after successful install;
  3. Download and put on the root of you SD card Quarx CM10 mod and GoogleApps ; NOTE 2: Here i made some mistakes and downloaded the latest CM10 mod (around july-sep 2012) and the GoogleApps (august 2013) and things went pretty bad: nu keyboard, no network, nu USB recognition. What i did was to flash a prior CM10 version and Google Apps around the date of the CM10 ROM. The links on step 3 are the ones that are as much as posibble new and are working together!
  4. Power Off your phone (when you Power On, be prepared when the phone LED turns Blue);
  5. Power On the device and the LED turns Blue, press the Volume Down button;
  6. Navigate through the menu with the Volume buttons and accept with the Power button and use the Back or Go Back links to go back up one level of the menu;
  7. Go to Recovery, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, if things will go bad you will restore your old ROM. So go to “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again, backup all;
  8. Select the wipe data/factory reset;
  9. Select wipe cache;
  10. From the main menu, select Advance and wipe Delvik cache;
  11. Select “Install Zip from SD Card” > “Choose Zip from SD Card” and select the ROM zip file you put on the root of your SD card;
  12. Wait! ^-^
  13. Repeat step 11 to install the Google Apps package also on the root of your SD card;
  14. Go Back and select “Reboot System Now.”
  15. Waaaaaaaaiiit!!! The first boot will take tones of time to load so be patient O.o; If you think you are waiting way to long: take off the battery, put it back, go in Recovery (when the LED goes Blue, press the Down Volume button) and do steps 8, 9, 10, after that Reboot.

New device stats:

Android version: 4.1.1

Enjoy JellyBean! ^-^

  1. Thanks for this, very easy… except I got to step 7, wen to “Recovery” and there was only two options “[Stock recovery]” and “[Custom recovery]”… How do I create a nandroid backup?

  2. im new to this. is this a completely working mod for MB526? i hear about CM11 having problems such as no Wi Fi, or the phone lights don’t work..etc.

    Thanks for this guide, btw.

  3. hi
    my device (Motorola Defy+ MB526) stock stats is a little different with yours in system version and kernel version as:

    System version: 45.0.2310.MB526.MERetail.en.06

    Android version: 2.3.6

    Kernel version: 2.3.32.9-ge281b6e hudsoncm@il93lnxdroid80#1

    Build number: 4.5.1.134_DFP-231

    Is it important???
    thanks

    • I don’t think so! I think the most important thing is the build number (linked with the boot loader) and yours is like mine.
      I think you should go for it and it will work like a charm.
      Read carefully and BACKUP first…if things will turn bad.
      Good luck and let me know if you did it. ^-^

  4. followed this and it worked a treat. phone seems much improved. not had to remove battery and reboot once in two days!
    one issue though, I like to use video camera and it’s set at something like 900 by 500 and can manage about 12 frames per second. which doesn’t look good. can’t see any way to drop resolution.
    also, should hear be on for every app?
    would playing with processor clock speed give me a better frame rate?

    many thanks though, great work!

    • I’m using another phone at the moment but:
      1. 900×500 is the only setting for resolution on your phone. I didn’t have problems like that.
      2. I’m not sure about frame rate but you can install a benchmark app, overklock the processor(I used 1200mhz) and do a benchmark with the stock 1000mhz and another with 1200. I suggest a reboot between tests.

      Glad you like it! Have fun with your brand new device! ^-^

    • Leave hwa on, test it, play with it and see how the device behaves. I think I had choices and for sure I recorded videos with no problem. Go to the camera settings, do you have any choices for resolution?

  5. Hi, (you may or may not notice have changed name from misstwihard – that/this is/was my daughter’s account (mine actualy))

    was getting lots of issues with video – and this is an important aspect for me. the sound kept dropping out. I tried lgcamera but same issue on sound and still low framerate, even when 30 fps selected. also 720 didn’t work. I have a green lens defy +.. so i flashed cm 7. so far all seems good – will update when know more.

    not sure whats going off with battery meter, its not moved in a day so either the battery running is a lot better or its not working!

    video record more stable, youtube hd 15m (840 * 480) runs at 24 fps, and 720 runs at 12 fps. any idea what the 15m stands for. some settings labeled as 30m ?

    many thanks

    • As I said, I am using a different device right now because YouTube app on the defy plus with CM10 stopped working (lots of people with different devices reported that problem). I also remember now I did a video recording and the sound stopped and it skipped frames. I didn’t researched the problem.
      About the battery, search for how to do calibration on battery, like fully discharging and recharging with phone off. Boot and reboot.
      I don’t know what 15m or 30m means.
      Try searching if other people reported the video problem…xda-developers it’s the best place.
      When I will have a little time, I will boot my defy and test the video recording.
      I think you will be good with CM7…older mods are more stable. That is why I put CM10 and not 10.1 or 10.2.
      Also, if you made a backup of your stock Rom, restore it…the phone will work great but you won’t have the goodies of JellyBean. ;))
      See you later and I hope you will enjoy a fully functional device.

    • Ok, I dug out my defy+ with CM10 and I confirm there are no settings for resolution on video recording. You are stuck with 848×480.
      I also checked that I did 2 video recordings: one with the problems and the other one working perfectly, no frame skip and perfect sound. So the recording is not entirely bad, you can do perfect video recordings….maybe not all of them. 😉
      Although the stock defy+ couldn’t record 720p.
      You can try CM9 (I think it is available) with corresponding gapps (that is with the date of the gapps similar to the date of the CM9 Rom).
      If it doesn’t work, try CM7.
      You know, this rooting and flashing a new Rom involves lots of searching and reading to be sure the things you care most are working. Not all roms are fully stable, so be sure to do your homework first. ;))
      Hope it helps! Good luck! 😉

      • cheers! think I’m gonna stick with cm 7. its all good so far. battery is back to being awesome. can record video 840 * 480 at 24fps. everything works. I think, realistically, this is as good as this phones gonna get. many thanks again – I was thinking of new phone but I can live with this!

      • If it works and you are happy, enjoy your phone and have fun. All phones have some ups and downs so investing in a new one will not necessarily get free of problems. I am using a HTC Sensation right now and although it is an awesome phone it has problems. I received it for use for free but trust me, when I will have to return it, I will go back happily to my good old CM10 defy plus. ^-^
        Have fun!

  6. After installation everything seems to work except phone is enable to connect to my mobile network. Is this fixable

    Regards Dale

  7. So I have found that my phone does connect but not inside my house or in some locations where it worked well prior to Rom upgrade. I’m on Australian Telstra next-g network (850 MHz frequency) Does flashing Rom change any of these network frequency settings?

  8. hello there. I was looking for some reliable Moto defy plus rooting, and yours seems to be very convincing! I think i’ll give it a try… But i have one question. Is it possible to back up the whole phone firmware, software anything like that, so that i will be able to restore my phone back to it’s stock situation? And will i have any troubles using your rooting method? my phone has the following stats:

    System version: 45.0.2310.MB526.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU
    Android version: 2.3.6
    Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-ge281b6e hudsoncm@il93lnxdroid51 #1
    Build number: 4.5.1-134_DFP-231

    The build number is the same as yours…

    • Hello,

      Thanks for the confidence. 🙂

      1. It should work with your stats. The only difference is the System version. I think this is important if you brick your phone, you will have to search a stock firmware version based on the system version you have and flash that with RSD Lite.

      But let’s pretend it will never happen and i have a feeling it will not happen. 🙂 For precaution, read first how to unbrick your motorola defy plus.

      2. On PART 2, step 7 you will make a system backup so if things went wrong, you will restore your system to the previous state. I don’t think it will backup SMS, apps or any other things, try separate apps before flashing anything and make sure you backed up all of your stuff.

      I didn’t go deep into the backup phase because i don’t have important things on SMS, i don’t care about call logs and i don’t bother spending 30-45 min installing back the apps i use.

      For apps backup try Helium. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

      Let’s sumarize: Do a system backup and separately do apps, SMS, call logs etc. backups. Just to make surewe’re safe.

      Good luck and have fun!

  9. Hello there, I got a problem.

    I’m trying to update my standard Andriod Defy + tot android 4.4 using this turtorial
    (https://kaigaraonline.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/how-to-install-android-kitkat-4-4-4-via-cyanogenmod-11-on-motorola-defy/)

    It linked me to here. Everything goes right till step 11.
    It errors when i install the zipfolder (CM-10.2-20131020-NIGHTLY-Mb526)

    Ive tried several others from this link (given in the other turtorial) http://quarx2k.ru/archive/cm10.2-nightly-defy+/

    They all give the same error:
    Installing update…
    E:Error in /sdcard/cm-10.2-20130917-mb526.zip
    (status 0)
    Installation aborted.

    I’m thinking i got the wrong ROM? I don’t have any knowledge about things as these. So, can anybody set me up with the right links?

    The good Rom and gapps.. I’m quite lost here.

    Thanks in advance and best regards,

    🙂

    • Start carefully from the very beginning and make sure you know the build number and software number of your unrooted device. Download the rom based on that build / software version.
      Another thing is to try and reroot your phone. Start from the beginning and read the tutorials very very carefully. Good luck and tell me if you need help! 😉

      • Thanks for you’r reply!

        There is a new problem now, to explain i will go through all my steps.
        1-installed framaroot successfully
        2-installed 2nd init version 2.3 successfully
        3-put on CM 10.2-20131030-nightly-mb-526
        Gapps-jb-20130813
        Flashed this rom, it errors. Here is where i posted my last post. You gave me the link to TWRP. Installed it. Now with twrp i installed the same CM 10.2 again. Worked!

        After the second restart android 4.1.1 started up, worked but gave the errors that it could not install my apps i had before and could not see my contacts. Because of the gapps i thought? So i continued.

        4-put CM-11-20150528-nightly-mb526.zip on the root of the SD card
        New Bootstrap and Resize.zip
        Gaps.kk.20150404 (all from the turtorial)

        5- Started with installing the Bootstrap. It failed and said i did not have a rooted device and gave the option to install super-su? (it was something like this) I accidently accepted and from here things wen’t wrong.

        it got stuck after i clicked yes. And i had to restart the device. Now it gives the option to go to TWRP by clicking at the most left option button and go further with the magnifying glass at the far right. (which does nothing, nothing happens).

        Now in TWRP, it always says: E: unable to mount ‘/cache’ ‘/mount’ and ‘/sytem’
        I tried to install bootstrap-resize-cm11-gapps again. It came up with E:usermrf.displays=”bootstap” but still saying it is succesful in installing

        wiped cache/rebooted. Now suddenly it starts! lol. Lets see if it works correctly. It worked, i was installing my apps, lost my phonenumbers though..

        But out of the blue it crashed, just wen’t out. With starting up i get on the recovery – magnifying screen again. When going further it just stops working, with recovery ill have to do everything again. Something’s wrong. What can i do?

        I know this is a bit of a chaotic reply and my english isn’t the best but i’ll hope you understand.

        Thanks

    • The gapps site is down and as it is said on the website i hope the files will be up soon. As for the Quarx files i know that in the last week the site was down also. Please wait till both sites will be up and operational and get all the proper files prior to flash anything. Good luck!
